Baseball Opener

Besides starting at 6:30 AM in the morning we got ourselves started inthe right way this past Wednesday as we opened against UM-Crookston in the Metrodome. We are obviously pleased with the wins but recognize that we can improve in certain areas. Our defense played really well. We made all the routine plays and made a couple not so routine plays which is encouraging. Our catchers were outstanding behind the plate (Smolinski and Stace). Our pitching is much improved but we need to clean up the deep counts, or we will have some isssues down the road. I was able to throw 8 different pitchers in the DH (4 each game) and I think that will help as we head to Phoenix on March 12. Our new guys (Lammert, Oestreich, Smallbrook, Brenner) threw the really well for the first time out and our starters tried to be to cute to early and had to many deep counts and did not attack the hitters like we want. I lectured them Thursday at practice so hopefully we are all on the same page. I'm hoping thats a good thing, because we did throw a no hitter the first game.
We will be posting comments after each day on our spring trip and during the season and hope that you will enjoy maybe some of the inside scoop as we continue through the season.
